Landing Page Architecture and Theming for Drupal

Course Description

Learn how to configure and theme landing pages for Drupal 8. You'll learn techniques for landing page design, configuration, and theming, and what questions to ask before you start designing and building your page.

We'll build out several landing pages throughout the course and create themes that provide layouts for each one. 

Prerequisites: This course is for individuals who have Drupal site building experience (know how to create Content Types, Blocks, and Views), a basic understanding of theming, and want to learn new techniques for creating layouts and landing pages.

  • How to pick the best configuration technique for your landing page

  • Theming techniques that will enable consistent landing page components

The Blended Learning Process

This blended learning course is scheduled over four weeks. It consists of pre-recorded videos and exercises that allow you to self-direct your learning and learn at your own schedule, a weekly live training with your instructor and cohort to deepen your understanding, and one-on-one training sessions with instructors to get more guidance and support as needed.

Here's what to expect:

  • 📺 19 carefully crafted videos (over 90 minutes) and virtual exercises: Learn at your own pace with engaging videos and exercises that you can review at any time. You'll learn how to plan and build effective landing pages for content editors and end-users, and gain a knowledge of the modules, theming and configuration techniques that will bring your content to life. You'll also learn the right questions to ask before you start building your page and how to conduct accessibility testing to ensure your content is compliant with the latest laws.
  • 👩‍🏫 4 sessions of live, interactive training over Zoom (Tuesdays, 45 mins): Deepen your understanding with your instructor and cohort in a live online training session every week. These sessions are scheduled every Tuesday between 1 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. ET, and are complete with demos, show-and-tells, and breakout sessions to validate that you understand the course materials. You'll demonstrate your knowledge of key concepts and create themes and landing pages using Paragraphs, Block Types, Panels, and the Layout Builder, and share ideas and techniques.
  • 👨‍💻 One-on-one sessions for personalized support (30 mins): Need more support? Schedule Office Hours appointments with your instructor to get additional guidance by videoconference. Skip the Zoom fatigue by getting direct feedback and answers to lingering questions or topics you're struggling with. Up to a maximum of 30 minutes per session. 
  • 💬 A dedicated Slack channel to learn and grow together: Join your cohort on Slack! Ask questions, collaborate on assignments, and chat with other trainees and your instructors during and after the course. 
  • 🏆 A certificate upon completion: We'll send you a certificate to celebrate your successful completion of this course. You can choose to receive an e-certificate or have a physical certificate mailed to you.

It's recommended that you spend 2 hours a week on learning, completing the exercises, and participating in the live sessions to fully absorb the course materials.


Section 0  

Live session: Install party!
Date: Tuesday, Nov. 19, 1 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. ET
Duration: 30 minutes

This pre-training install party will make sure you're set up for success. We'll check that you have all the requirements for the course and troubleshoot any setup issues.


Section 1

Live session: Introductions, introduction of the concept, and your needs for landing pages. 
Date: Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. ET
Duration: 30 minutes

  • Analyzing a page 
  • 3 types of components: 1-time use content, reusable content, and dynamic content
  • Setup: Create a basic theme to use, with Bootstrap already in place   

Exercise: Gather landing page requirements, and a scavenger hunt. 


Section 2

Live session: Review of the previous week, demo the landing pages we found, and introduce Paragraphs, Blocks and the Layout Builder. We'll also go over landing page building blocks: options.

Duration: 45 minutes

Section 3

Live session: Review of previous exercise: what type of paragraphs did you create? This week: styling. We'll look at approaches to creating templates and CSS.

Section 4  

Live session: Review of Paragraphs styling: what were you able to build?

What do I need to bring? You need to bring a laptop and charger to the course. Or contact us to rent a laptop.

Can I pay with a cheque? In most cases, we do accept payment by cheque. Contact us and we can issue you an invoice for the training.

What size is the class? Our classes usually have 6-10 participants, and we have a hard limit of 12 participants per trainer.
